Michigan Drones Avoid Federal Arrest Safer and Smarter Skies

CJ Eason, Michigan’s First African American Female Drone Pilot, Urges Operators to Prioritize Safety Amid Recent Drone Sightings in New Jersey

Detroit, MI — Recent reports of mysterious drone sightings in New Jersey have raised concerns nationwide about airspace safety and the risks posed by unauthorized drone operations. Michigan’s own CJ Eason, a certified drone pilot and the state’s first African American female drone pilot, is stepping forward to champion safer skies by promoting the B4UFLY app and responsible drone use.

As a Member of the FAA Collegiate Workgroup and President of Workforce Development for Hired In Michigan, Eason has made it her mission to educate drone operators on navigating Michigan’s airspace while avoiding the pitfalls of copycat drone flights, which can jeopardize public safety and aviation operations.

Airspace Awareness: Why It Matters in Michigan

Michigan’s diverse airspace includes controlled zones near major airports, restricted areas around critical infrastructure, and no-fly zones in national parks and other sensitive locations. Violating these boundaries can result in severe penalties and risks to manned aircraft, emergency operations, and local communities.

“Airspace restrictions exist for everyone’s safety,” Eason explained. “From Detroit Metro Airport to the Great Lakes’ national parks, drone operators must understand where they can and cannot fly. The B4UFLY app simplifies this process, giving users real-time airspace information to fly legally and responsibly.”

Key features of the B4UFLY app include:

• Controlled Airspace Alerts: Clear guidance on areas near airports or other restricted zones.

• Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs): Notifications for special events or emergency operations.

• Interactive Maps: Tools to identify safe flying zones based on location or search criteria.

• Educational Resources: FAA guidelines to ensure compliance and safe operations.

The Dangers of Copycat Drone Flights

Recent drone sightings in New Jersey highlight the growing trend of operators mimicking unsafe flights they see in the media or online. Eason warns that these “copycat” flights can lead to mid-air collisions, disruptions to emergency services, and even legal consequences.

“Unauthorized flights are not a harmless activity,” she said. “They put lives at risk and harm the reputation of responsible drone users. If you’re unsure where to fly, use B4UFLY and follow FAA regulations to keep everyone safe.”

Michigan Drone Facts and Opportunities

Drone technology is booming in Michigan, with over 28,000 registered drones statewide. Operators are using drones for a variety of purposes, including agriculture, real estate, construction, and public safety.

• National Stats: As of August 8, 2024 there are over 785,827 registered drones in the U.S., and the demand for skilled operators is growing rapidly.

• Economic Impact: Drones contribute to cost savings, increased efficiency, and job creation across industries.

“Drones are transforming industries, and Michigan is no exception,” Eason added. “But with great opportunity comes great responsibility. Safe skies begin with informed pilots.”

Empowering Future Pilots

Through Workforce Development for Hired In Michigan, Eason provides training programs to prepare the next generation of drone pilots. Her programs focus on airspace safety, FAA certification, and leveraging drones for career opportunities.

Eason is also committed to diversifying the field by inspiring more executives to join the growing drone industry. “Representation matters,” she said. “I’m proud to lead by example and show that this field is open to everyone.”

Top 3 Tips for Safe Drone Operations in Michigan

1. Check B4UFLY Before You Take Off: Ensure your flight path complies with airspace restrictions.

2. Avoid Flying Near People or Wildlife: Respect privacy and prevent potential hazards.

3. Register Your Drone: Stay compliant with FAA regulations to avoid penalties.

Join the Movement for Safer Skies

Eason encourages all Michigan drone operators—whether hobbyists or professionals—to download the B4UFLY app and embrace safe flying practices.

“Before you fly, know your airspace,” she said. “Together, we can ensure that drones continue to be a force for good while keeping our skies safe and secure.”
